Spells as prayers

I grew up in Catholic school so I have a huge background in the church. And over the years practicing paganism I have come to realize that spells are prayers. Or like prayers at least.

Bear with me. What do we do when we do a spell? Typically, not always but typically, we charge up energy and use that to send our will out to a chosen god or goddess. How is that much different from a prayer?

It seems to me that through the ages and the christianization of pagan lifestyle that maybe the first prayers were more like spells. composed of ritual and psycho-drama but over the years this evolved into simply talking to God. Maybe if more christians prayed the way we do they wouldn't feel so lost in their faith.

I agree with you, in that spells are a different form of prayer. Christians do that in church all the time: they raise their energy with singing and chanting, and then with all that energy they pray to their Lord, and through their faith they Know that He is Listening. Perhaps that is not the most efficient way to Pray, since only sometimes their prayers are answered, I think because their form of prayer may be inefficient, with all the individual prayers going along with the energy being released. But, if they were focused on one idea, say Prosperity for the entire congregation, their prayers might be answered more often.

prayers

A priest told me once that God answers all prayer... just not always the way we expect. It reminds me of how if you aren't specific with you're spells the force you draw up will take the path of least resistence, or how a a spell can go wrong if you're wording isn't right. Ever try a love spell and end up with a stalker?

Spells are totally prayers. Every religion I think does in someway. It is good to pray, its a way to communicate to the God/Goddess/Spirit. And She always answers...

A good thing to try is to even keep a prayer journal, I got this idea from a book I read called "The Red Book"

I was a minister in metaphysical church for awhile. One of our more Christian
congregation members came to my Wicca and witchcraft class to ask me what
exactly a spell was and this is what I had to say to her...

"When things in your life get hard, do you talk to God, explain your
troubles and ask for help and guidance?"

"Well of course I do, it's called praying!"

"Throw in some incense, a candle, invoke a few angels for protection ,
and you've got yourself a spell lady"

"Huh, well I suppose its ok then"

...must of subconsciously asked for her approval

Approval

Yes we must alway seek the approval of our Christian betters!!!

That was sarcasm in case anyone didn't notice.

... Some how I just know somebody is going to quote that line out of context and get me serious trouble with my Goddess

I know that this may be a somewhat unpopular view but I do not think that a spell and a prayer are the same thing nesessarily. Before I explain why I think this way I just want to say that this is just my opinion and I am not trying to trash anyones' views. There are people that I know who do spells without ever calling upon any sort of spiritual being.  They simply push their personal energy into an object such as a candle,  and they program that energy to do it's task.  You can call upon a god or goddess (or spirit, ancestor etc.) in order to add potency and guidance to a spell, but there is still that level of personal control over the outcome of a situation. A prayer on the other hand you are relying on the beings power to change your circumstances and/or to provide you wisdom. There is nothing wrong with that at all. I do it too. It simply depends on the situation. Anyway that is my opinion, take it or leave it.

I couldn't agree more

I have thought of spells as prayers for a long time. It's so true and is wonderful to here others approach it in this way. A spell is simply focusing your prayer on a physical object. My girlfriend who is very Christian has started performing spells with me. It's been a great way to pray together.
